Financial Capability Program
The Financial Capability Program is currently being developed to complement our existing JAS programs. The goal of the program is to empower low to moderate income clients to maximize their financial resources and build wealth to increase their economic stability and mobility. The focus of our program will be on helping clients take achievable steps to meet their own goals.
The program currently hosts a VITA tax preparation service which is a free service for households who earned less than $54,000 in 2016. This program helps to recover refunds like the earned income tax credit to those who qualify. We are serving clients from across JAS’s housing and education and training programs. The tax site is also open to all low-to-moderate-income community members. The tax preparation site is at 402 Rindge Avenue in Apartment 4D in Cambridge. The site is staffed by IRS-certified volunteers and will be open until April 18th:
o Tuesdays 1 – 5 p.m.
o Thursdays 4:30 – 8:30 p.m.
o Saturdays 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Please call 617-874-2772 for more information or to schedule an appointment.
JAS is assessing the needs of its residents, students and other community members and plans to hold small group workshops on issues around credit, debt, and saving goals. Through partnerships with organizations such as the Midas Collaborative (massassets.org) and the Family Independence Initiative (fii.org), JAS will connect students and clients with the resources needed to achieve their financial goals. JAS is piloting a matched savings program for JAS YouthBuild students, linked to one-on-one financial coaching and a comprehensive financial capability curriculum.
