Financial Capability Program
The Financial Capability Program offers free tax preparation, education on credit and asset building, and one-one-one financial counseling. The goal of the program is to empower low to moderate income clients to maximize their financial resources and build wealth to increase their economic stability and mobility. The focus is to help clients take achievable steps to meet their own goals.
JAS partners with the IRS to offer on-site Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) tax prep services free of charge for families earning less than $54,000 per year. Through this program, JAS ensures that filers receive all available tax credits and avoid high-cost tax preparation services. In 2018, tax services begin in late January and run through mid-April.
In addition, JAS offers regular workshops and one-on-one coaching to help residents and students achieve their financial goals. JAS partners with local nonprofits with expertise in a range of issues to offer regular workshops on issues such as student loans, credit repair, and healthcare enrollment. JAS is currently partnering with the Midas Collaborative (MidasCollab.org) to administer a matched savings program for JAS YouthBuild students.
