Just-A-Start acquires New Street site to build new affordable apartments

Proposed project will create family-sized housing opportunities in North Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE – January 17, 2020 – Just-A-Start has purchased a 43,800 square foot property at 52 New Street in North Cambridge, with plans to build new, affordable one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. “We’re excited to serve more Cambridge residents through this project,” said Carl Nagy-Koechlin, Just-A-Start’s Executive Director. “We’re very grateful to Joanne Pizzuto, whose family trust owned the site, for sharing the project’s vision and working with us to make this happen. This opportunity is a great example of how much more can be accomplished when partners – the City of Cambridge, Just-A-Start as the local nonprofit developer, Ms. Pizzuto as a private owner, and investors – work together toward the shared vision of safe, affordable homes for all Cambridge residents. In this instance, the whole community benefits from collaboration.”

Development will begin with a comprehensive community process later this year, with the goal to break ground in 2022 or 2023 and have the new apartments completed and available by 2025. The site is currently occupied by Evolve Fitness, whose lease will extend through 2021.

“I’m looking forward to working with Just-A-Start and the rest of the community to make this vision a reality for Cambridge residents,” said Sumbul Siddiqui, Mayor of the City of Cambridge. “The City has such a commitment to, and need for, affordable homes for our diverse residents. It’s exciting to be involved, at the very beginning, with a nonprofit developer and a real estate development project that will truly, literally change the lives of our community neighbors and friends.”

As part of Just-A-Start’s core mission, the organization develops, preserves, and owns affordable apartments that allow low-to moderate income individuals and families to live in Cambridge at rents that are within their means. Just-A-Start’s portfolio of rental properties includes nearly 600 apartments ranging in size from studios to five bedrooms, with approximately 130 new affordable and workforce apartments in its current real estate development pipeline.
