52 New Street housing lottery applications closed on Thursday, August 28th. The public lottery took place virtually on Tuesday, September 16th via Microsoft Teams. All applicants will receive their lottery placement confirmation by September 30th. ABOUT
We’re transforming the lot at 52 New Street into modern and environmentally-friendly family housing. The new building will create 106 affordable apartments for residents, providing much-needed affordable housing opportunities in a tight and increasingly expensive rental market.
52 New Street is the first project permitted under the City of Cambridge’s Affordable Housing Overlay. It is also being built to Passive House International standards, to create an ultra-low energy building that aligns with both city and state goals of reducing energy consumption.

Just A Start
Founded in 1968, Just A Start is a community development corporation with a mission to promote equity to create access to stable housing and build pathways to economic opportunity. We build equitable and thriving communities by guiding individuals and families on their path to economic stability through affordable housing, career training, and comprehensive support services. For over 50 years Just A Start has served Somerville and Cambridge through housing assistance, career training, youth education, and financial opportunity programs. We have developed over 600 rental apartments of affordable family housing and 130 affordable homes. Our workforce development programs include Biomedical and IT training and the YouthBuild program. We also offer financial coaching and tax prep through our Financial Opportunity program, and comprehensive support for families towards financial and social well-being through the Families Moving Forward program. Annually, Just A Start serves over 2,600 people.

52 New Street will include 22 one-bedroom, 62 two-bedroom, and 22 three-bedroom apartments.
Yes, there are four accessible apartments that will be available through the lottery. There are also two apartments with sensory modifications for low-sight and low-hearing households.
The project includes 37 spaces of covered parking for residents on the ground floor. There is also a secure bike storage room for future residents.
