Are you a Cambridge homeowner living in a 1-4 unit building and looking for technical assistance and low interest financing for a home repair or renovation?

Just A Start’s Home Improvement Program has helped over a thousand income-eligible Cambridge homeowners improve their home’s efficiency, functionality and aesthetics over the past 50+ years. Our team will help you scope your project, identify code and safety issues, and secure competitive contractor bids for the work. Our team provides project support throughout the project planning and construction process.

How the program works:

In partnership with the City of Cambridge Housing Department, we offer low/no interest loans for project construction. When possible, we seek grant assistance and partner with other non-profit lenders and city departments to maximize project savings for you.

A program priority is to identify and correct any code issues and ensure that your home is safe and comfortable to live in, both now and in the future.

Home improvement work can include projects like:

  • Life safety upgrades like lead abatement, mold remediation and structural repairs
  • Accessibility upgrades like stair chairs and step-in showers
  • Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing repairs and upgrades
  • Carpentry and roofing work including repair/replacement of porches, roofs, siding windows and doors.
  • Emergency work to repair heating systems and water damage.
  • Repair/replacement of old & damaged fixtures, appliances, flooring, cabinets etc.
