ABOUT SOLAR START
Solar Start provides hands-on training in photovoltaic (solar panel) installation and maintenance, equipping trainees with the certifications, skills, and confidence to launch meaningful careers in the fast-growing solar industry.
This three-month training program consists of classroom and field-based learning, and industry-recognized certifications. Participants learn to assess, design, and install solar photovoltaic (PV) systems safely and efficiently. Trainees will gain direct connections to employers eager to hire the next generation of clean energy professionals.
No previous construction experience required!

The Pilot Program
Preparing the next generation of solar professionals began with the Solar Panel Installation Pilot Program.
Government Support
The Healey-Driscoll Administration supported the expansion with an $850,000 grant.
Solar Start Announcement
Strong partnerships and over $1 million in funding fueled the launch of Solar Start.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Ages 18-30
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds and comfortable working at heights and on ladders
- Ready to work and seeking employment in the solar/construction industries
- Able to attend in-person Solar Start trainings in Cambridge, MA
- Have U.S. employment authorization
- Identify as low- to moderate-income
- Hold a HiSET, GED, or high school diploma
PV Installers assemble and mount photovoltaic systems on roofs or other structures for homes, businesses, and utility-scale solar projects.
While dates are still to be determined, trainees should prepare to remain available from January through March 2026. Classes will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 10:00am to 3:00pm.

Trainees gain the technical, safety, and professional skills needed to launch a career in the solar industry. The curriculum will consist of ten modules that cover the following:
- Fundamentals of electricity and solar energy
- Site assessment and system design
- Solar PV installation and maintenance
- Standalone solar systems and solar HVAC
- Residential insulation and safety practices
- Career readiness, work ethics, and industry awareness
Every trainee has the opportunity to earn nationally-recognized certificates that align with current industry standards.

- Complete a Program Application & submit required documentation
- Attend an interview with our Counseling Services team
- Attend “Solar Foundations” – a one day orientation to decide if the program is a good fit
Trainees are eligible to earn up to $1,200 based on program milestone completion.
