Just A Start

For over 50 years Just A Start has served Somerville and Cambridge through housing assistance, career training, youth education, and financial opportunity programs. We have developed over 600 rental apartments of affordable family housing and 130 affordable homes. Our workforce development programs include Biomedical and IT training and the YouthBuild program. We also offer financial coaching and tax prep through our Financial Opportunity program, and comprehensive support for families towards financial and social well-being through the Families Moving Forward program. Annually, Just A Start serves over 2,600 people.

240 Broadway is located in The Port neighborhood of Cambridge at intersection of Broadway and Windsor Street, a few blocks away from Central Square.
The proposed type of units for this project include 9 one-bedroom and 11 two-bedroom units.
There would be two accessible units. One (1) one-bedroom unit will be available on the first floor. One (1) two-bedroom unit will be available on the fifth floor.
Square footage per floor is about 3,500 sf including circulation space.
The largest 2 BR apartment is about 950 sf., and the smallest 1 BR apartment is about 677 sf.
We are exploring joint financing opportunities for the 240 Broadway St. project alongside our nearby 37 Brookline Street site. Our proposal for 240 Broadway involves redeveloping the parcel into a 17,500 square-foot multifamily building, featuring 20 affordable housing units.
This site was initially proposed for an affordable homeownership condominium project back in 2019-2020. However, we have since revised the proposal for a rental housing project.
